Mount Putuo

Sold

4” x 4” x .5”. Acrylic, pen, embroidery thread and gold leaf.

This mixed-media piece incorporates brilliant red acrylic and gold leaf to create a dynamic impact for its small size. Gold traditionally represents spiritual gifts and divinity, and here it forms the shape of a mountain that is ascended to reach Nirvana. Mount Putuo, one of the four sacred mountains in Chinese Buddhist belief, is the bodhimanda (place of awakening) of the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, the bodhisattva of compassion.

Almost ten years ago, in a place of spiritual struggle and experiencing what may have been the first occurrence of my illness, I ascended a spiritual mountain and received a gift of healing. During that time, I leaned heavily on Avalokitesvara for the compassion I needed.
